In the past, the name LaToya Jackson has most often been connected to tabloids & scandal – from posing for Playboy, to an explosive tell-all autobiography, & an allegedly abusive & manipulative ex-husband / manager. However, LaToya has now erased the negative energy from her life & plans to change everything by starting over. Her comeback single, ‘Just Wanna Dance’ was her first US Billboard chart hit in 24 years. Next up is the release of ‘Startin’ Over’ – an album that will finally bring her music to the forefront. Brother Michael’s recent trial was a trying time for the Jackson family, who were constantly by his side. In this exclusive interview, LaToya breaks the family’s silence - speaking openly about the trial of the decade & taking the opportunity to clear up some rumours.

How did you set about rebuilding your relationship with your family & getting rid of the bad influences in your life?
Contrary to what most people might think, there was never a problem with my family. However, my ex-management & family was a different story. By being very analytical with my life I began to sort things out & started with the people that surrounded my business.

Do you have a message to other women in controlling or violent relationships?
Yes of course. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to terminate a relationship when violence is introduced into the relationship.We as woman have a tendency to over look it when it first happens; we too often view it as love.This of course is not love. Love is not controlling. Love is not violent.

Is there any truth to the rumours that you & your family will feature in a reality TV series? Can you tell me about the show & what we can expect?
There is no truth to that.

What about a Jackson family CD?
The brothers are currently working on material, but as far as the entire family, not at the moment.

You attended the trial in support of your brother. How difficult was it to listen to the graphic testimony?
It was quite difficult. Extremely nerving.

Can you tell me about the events following the ‘Not Guilty’ verdict? What was your personal reaction & how relieved was the family?
I as well as everyone else in my family was quite elated & relieved.

Had the family made any arrangements for Michael’s children & business in case he was found guilty?
No, because we knew he would be vindicated. We knew the truth. We kept a very positive attitude towards the entire case.

Do you think the positive verdict will see a resurgence of the Jackson family?
Every problem that we have over come has had a tendency to make us all stronger.

Did you ever watch the E! Television trial re-enactments?
Not really. I watched it for five minutes once & decided this was not for me.

You released your recent club hit ‘Just Wanna Dance’ under the name “Toy”.Tell me the motivation behind the whole “Toy” alias.
It’s very simple. I wanted people to judge my music on its merit & not the name associated to it.

How did it feel to be back on the US Billboard chart again?
Absolutely wonderful! I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I saw it climbing. I look forward to being on all the worldwide charts when ‘Startin’ Over’ is released.

What are your hopes for the ‘Startin’ Over’ project?
That people will really listen to my lyrics & began to understand who I am. I’m also hoping that this project takes off right to the top of the charts. This is a great way to bring awareness to those who have given up on life. You can always “Start Over”.

Your issue of Playboy was the best seller in the history of the publication & you looked incredible. How was that whole experience?
I was simply a nervous wreck. I was afraid. I was embarrassed & I knew it was something that I should not have been doing.

Would you ever pose again?
I truly don’t believe in saying never, but most likely not.

Who would you like to play you in a movie of your life?
I don’t feel anyone could portray the true essence of my life, the way I could. Simply because no one could truly feel the fear, the pain, the hurt & the happiness
that I’ve endured.

What are the pros & cons of having the “Jackson” surname?
There are quite a few. It opens a lot of doors, yet, it closes a lot of doors.

What message would you like to send out to your fans?
Keep a positive attitude & believe that you can have anything in life that you put your mind to. If you can conceive it, you can achieve it. Think from the end, this means think as if it already happened.
