For a couple of months before the Tokyo event on the 8th and 9th of March, Club Michael Jackson collected hundreds of fan letters posted from all over the world and put them in a folder to be presented to Michael Jackson himself.
Club President Renee, left for Tokyo on the 6th of March and got back on the 12th March, here is what happened in that time.
“I was a little nervous about traveling alone in Japan, but it turned out to be fine. I had printed out maps showing where my hotel and the venue was so I could just show a taxi driver where I wanted to go.
It was about 4:30pm when I arrived at Studio Coast for a 5pm start, there was a media circus out the front which made it very easy to find! There were all kinds of people waiting on the red carpet to go in, I picked up my ticket and VIP tag and met some really great people before we even entered the venue.
Carlo, a big fan from the United States was dressed from head to toe to look like Michael and was being asked non stop for photo opportunities. He had done a fantastic job on his outfit and after chatting for a while, I found that he was an absolute sweetheart too.
I met some fans from the fan club in Italy,
www.jacksonland.it who were also very excited about the chance to meet Michael, it was great to see that I wasn’t the only foreigner who had come to Japan for this event.
We got into the venue at about 5:25pm, Michael still hadn’t arrived but we didn’t mind because it was such a relief to get out of the cold. Once inside, I found a table with some other English speaking guests and we sat down and had a drink.
Soon enough, we started noticing some famous faces around the place. Raymone Bain was walking around so I went up and we had a chat and a photo, I showed her the folder with all the letters and she said that Michael was going to love it! She asked me who I was and where I was from and said that she’ll keep in touch with me with official statements for Club Michael Jackson which is fantastic news. Although busy, she was very friendly and approachable.
Then I spotted E Casanova, I couldn’t believe it! I had no idea he was going to be there and there was no way I was going to miss the chance to meet him. I must say I was a little nervous at first but once we started talking it was obvious how genuine he was. E Casanova deserves his own news article so I won’t say too much right now but he’s very friendly and a real gentleman, he’s explosive on the stage and amazingly talented. It was a pleasure to meet him and a real treat to watch him perform.
At
about 7pm Michael arrived and the screams were deafening! There was an area upstairs with some children who I believe were orphans and he walked around meeting them first. He looked amazing, he had his sunglasses on but he was smiling the whole time. He went into a glass room above the tables where we were and the meet and greets started shortly after in ticket number order.
Suddenly the atmosphere in the room changed, just Michaels presence was electrifying! I lined up with my new friends and we waited patiently for our turn. Nobody was making any sense, we were all so excited – mid sentence people would stop what they were saying and say ‘is this REALLY happening?’ it was fantastic.
We had the choice of having our photo with Michael professionally taken and posted to us or taken with our own digital camera. Most foreigners decided to go with their own camera, maybe because it’s a scary thought that something like that could get lost in the mail, maybe because we wanted to see it right now!
I remember being about 4 or 5 people back from the door, just the thought that Michael Jackson was on the other side gave me goose bumps. We could see guests go in one at a time and some of them came out crying, some fainted, some looked like they just came off a rollercoaster – it made me wonder what I would be like.
Michaels security guards were all the loveliest of guys, they were helpful, understanding and told me how much Michael is going to love all the letters while I was waiting for my turn.
The girl in front of me went in and I looked at my watch, she was in there for about 90 seconds before she came out crying, I thought it was my turn but I saw security bringing a wheelchair up the stairs and I offered to have him go in front of me which he did. My heart was racing but I was surprisingly cool about it, I guess I have been anticipating that moment since Christmas day and I was as mentally prepared as I could be.
Then it was my turn, I walked in and there he was – Michael Jackson. A little taller than me with a big smile. He looked so healthy and happy, his skin was perfect, his hair was perfect, his clothes were luxurious and his voice was soft and sincere.
I introduced myself and he asked me where I was from, I said Australia and he said ‘wow, you’ve come a long way – where in Australia do you live?’ I said Brisbane and he said that he’s been to Brisbane. I told him that I was too little to see him when he came to Brisbane and he smiled.
The photographer took my camera and we were ushered to the area with a white back drop for the photo. He put his arm around my waist and I did the same, nothing registered while I was looking at the camera, I was smiling ear to ear but I could feel myself shaking. Then when the flash went off, I turned to him and told him what the folder was – I can’t remember what I said but Michael was thrilled about it, I told him about all the letters and then asked if I could read him mine. He said ‘sure, of course’ and I started reading.
My letter told him about the impact he’s had on my life and how amazing he is, he was smiling and thanking me while I was reading, I knew my letter so well that I read the first couple of words of each line and looked up at him and told him the rest – it was surreal. At the end, he leaned over and kissed me on the cheek and hugged me, words can’t describe how I felt at that moment. He took my folder and told me that he’s going to keep it and put it somewhere very special, he went and put it down, hugged me again and thanked me.
The next person was already in the room and my time was over, they asked me for my email address and I tried to write it down but my hands were shaking. I walked out of the room and threw myself at the nearest security guard who didn’t mind a big hug from an excited fan. He asked me if he liked the letters, ‘loved them!’ I said and they laughed. I think I hugged every security guard on the way down the stairs, they gave me my pre-autographed photo and bottle of Champagne.
E Casanova was at the bottom of the stairs, he got a big hug too! He laughed and asked me how it was. I was so happy, everyone who walked out of there was – I showed all my new friends the photo on my camera and they showed me theirs. We were all in a state of disbelief and happiness and I have never seen so many hugs in one room!
We were in party mode then, we grabbed a drink from the bar and danced to the non-stop Michael Jackson music they were playing.
When the last of the meet and greets were over, Michael came and sat at one of the tables in the front row and the show started. That in itself was incredible, he was only 3 or 4 meters away – he had his own table with security on standby but he was sitting down with the guests!
The show was awesome, they some dance groups and tribute artists; Super Stormy Girls, MJ-Spirit, Masato Kino, Hamed Mayani and E Casanova. Then a gospel and band, it was all fantastic. Michael was so chilled out, we could see him grooving to the music and having a drink.
When the show was almost over, Michael stood up and his guards walked him away – everyone followed and the area in front of the stage was completely empty so I walked up to the front and center in case Michael was about to come out. Lucky guess! He came out and told everyone that he just bought some glasses from the drug store and put them on, I filmed the speech which I hope to have online very soon.
Then Michael left, it was about 11:30pm – an hour and a half over time. The venue started to clear out.
The second day was very different, thousands of people, amazing stage show and Michael came and made a speech on stage after judging an art competition.
One exciting thing that happened on the second day was one of the security guards found me and told me that Michael was reading the letters in the ClubMJ folder on the way back to the hotel. He said that Michael loved reading them all and appreciated everyone taking the time to write to him. I was thrilled, and very touched. Until then I thought that Michael might have just been nice in gratefully accepting the letters but hearing that he had read them really warmed my heart. What a man, Michael Jackson rocks!”
From the whole team at Club Michael Jackson, thank you so much to everyone who contributed and posted or emailed a letter through. We hope this isn’t the last time we can make something like this happen.
BJ is dead again.
