Dziś przyszła książka Bruce'a do domu. Szybciutko dotarła. Przeglądnąłem pobieżnie. Dużo fajnych tekstów, ale szybko będzie sie czytać, bo spora czcionka i bardzo przejrzyście jest tekst sformatowany. Trochę tez o samym Bruce'ie, bo to w końcu jego książka. Wspomnienia ze współpracy z Michaelem rozpisane są na płyty i piosenki.

Parę lat temu trafiłam na “branżowe” forum inżynierów dźwięku, na którym wypowiadał się także Bruce Swedien (niestety nie mam nigdzie zapisanego adresu tego forum). Opowiadał trochę o swojej pracy z MJem. Prawdopodobnie te wiadomości znajdują się w jego książce, bo – o ile się orientuję – to obecne wydanie jest reedycją.
Może Was zainteresują wspomnienia najlepszego inżyniera dźwięku (oby to on „maczał palce” w niepublikowanych nagraniach MJa, które na pewno zostaną wypuszczone w świat – ten człowiek znał i kochał MJa i muzykę, w ogólności).
Gdzieś wyczytałam, że MJ zmarł zanim uregulował płatności wobec Swediena, jakieś małe pół miliona dolarów; ale Bruce stwierdził że złego słowa o MJu nie powie…

Michael Jackson is the most professional and the most accomplished artist I have ever worked with! And I have worked with the best the music industry has to offer. Michael is a bona fide international favorite, and he has been for a long time! He is unquestionably a survivor. Michael is a gentle soul. He is very polite. Working with him I always hear him use the words‚ Please‚ Thank You‚ and‚ You´re Welcome, in a industry where such courtesies are not usually used.

What I can truthfully say is that, first and foremost, Michael is an absolute joy to work with. I can´t think of another way to express my experience in working with him. There is no one that I would rather work with. He is the supreme artist. I have never worked with anyone who is more dedicated to his art, than Michael.

For instance, when we record a vocal, on a song, Michael vocalizes with his vocal coach, Seth Riggs, for at least an hour before he steps up to the microphone to record. I don´t mean that Michael vocalizes just once in a while. I mean that he vocalizes every time we record a vocal!

To me, that is real dedication... One of the most fascinating things about Michael Jackson is the boundless passion that he has for his music. His enthusiasm for the project at hand is like no one else I have ever worked with.

M. J.´s musical standards are incredibly high. When I work with Michael, we never settle for a musical production that is “Just Good Enough". Since the‚ Dangerous‚ album project, Michael and I have had a saying that goes‚ “The Quality goes in before the name goes on!” In other words, Michael and I must to be totally satisfied with the musical and technical quality of our productions before we will put our names on them.

Of course, Michael is not the kid next door!!!!

Wspomnienia Bruce Swediena - cd.

I have been working with Michael Jackson since 1977....

“The WIZ, the Movie”
The year is 1977. Bea and I were living in the Chicago area at the time. Quincy called me one night and asked, "Want to go to New York, and do a musical movie?". I said "Absolutely!". Any musical project with my old pal ‘Q’ is guaranteed to be alot of fun. So off we went to the “Big Apple” to do "The Wiz", the movie. While we were there, working on the “Wiz”, we met this young, 18 year-old kid by the name of Michael Jackson.(Michael played the 'scarecrow' in the 'Wiz', the movie) Tom Bahler was there with us doing vocal backgrounds and arrangements for the film. We were at A&R studios, on 52d Street. Bea (my wife) had come to New York to visit me.

One day Quincy and I were in the control room working on something, and I noticed out of the corner of my eye, that Tom Bahler was at the piano in the studio, playing and singing a song for Bea. She was obviously very interested in it. The song Tom was playing and singing for Bea was‚ “She's Out of My Life”.

The following year, when we were working on Michael’s Solo Album “Off The Wall”, we recorded it with Michael. How Michael could do such a sincere interpretation of the lyric has always puzzled me, because I know it was an experience he had never even thought about. It's a very mature emotion, and Michael was only 19 years old at the time.

When we were recording Michael´s vocal, he broke down and cried at the end of every take. We recorded about six or seven takes. At the end of each take Michael was sobbing, actually crying. I know he was sincere, because when we finished the last take, Michael was too embarassed to come in the control room. He just tippy-toed out the back door of the studio, got in his car, and left the studio building. Quincy said to me, "Hey... that's supposed to be, leave it on there, leave it there.”

We didn’t see Michael again until a day or two later! I don't know how Michael was relating to the subject, “She's Out of My Life”. He´d never had that kind of grown-up relationship with anybody, I don´t think so, anyway...


I LOVE LIBERIAN GIRL!!! There is something very special about that song!!!

“Liberian Girl”... Is one of my absolute favorites of all the music that I’ve done with Michael. Who could think of a thing like that, except Michael Jackson... it’s astounding.... The imagery, and everything else in it, it’s just an amazing fantasy.

I love the intro... Quiincy had Leta M’Bulu say, "NAKU PENDA PIYA - NAKU TAKA PIYA - MPENZIWE" , in Zulu, in the intro and in every turn-around... I think that sexy, little speaking line gave the “Liberian Girl” an identity in this wonderful song.... Really nice.... Michaels vocals on “Liberian Girl” are absolutely stellar! The lead, and the big, block background harmonies. Wow!!!

I am one lucky Dude!!!

Of all the music I have recorded, over the years, I am proudest of Michaels’ albums. Not only "Off The Wall", "Thriller" and "Bad", but “Dangerous”, “HIStory”, “Invincible”, and all the rest of the fantastic music that Michael, Quincy and I have recorded together. Am I a lucky dude, or what???

Recording and Mixing "Billie Jean"....

The year is 1982. The song is "Billie Jean". The sonic image of Michael Jacksons' "Billie Jean" is a perfect example of what happened, when I sat around dreaming awhile, about combining different recording techniques to produce a unique musical canvas with a tremendous 'sonic personality'.

Of course I was comfortably ensconsed in Westlake Audio’s beautiful new Studio ‘A’ on Beverly Boulevard, with my good friends Quincy Jones, Micheal Jackson and Rod Temperton. We were doing our favorite thing... We were making music!!! We had just started recording Michael Jackson’s album “Thriller”...

We were recording Michael’s song “Billie Jean”.....

I recorded the drums,(played by the fantastic drummer, N'Dugu) with as tight, and powerful a drum sound as I could come up with. Of course I put N'Dugus' drum set on my plywood drum platform. Also at this time, I had a special kick drum cover made that covers the whole front of the kick drum. There's a slot with a zipper in it that the mike fits through. When the kick drum mike is in place, in the slot in my drum cover, I zip the opening tightly shut around the mike.

I brought in my old pal George Massenburgs' spectacular sounding, portable, 12 channel recording console and used it to record the rhythm section. With it I recorded the bass, drums and guitars on my analogue 16 track, with no noise reduction equipment in the way of that fantastic sound!

In my estimation, the the result of the song “Billie Jean”, is a perfect example of what I call “Sonic Personality”. I don’t think there are many recordings, where all you need to hear is the first few drums beats, and you instantly know what song it is.

Great albums always start with great songs....

"Billie Jean" is just such a superb song! Of course, Michael wrote "Billie Jean"..

Quincy says that the lyric that Michael wrote is highly personal. I’m sure that’s true. Michael told us... it was about a girl, that climbed over the wall at Michael’s house, and was lounging out there, by the swimming pool.... she was laying out there, near the pool , lounging... hangin’ out... with shades on, her bathing suit on. One morning she just showed up! Kind of like a stalker, almost. She had accused Michael of being the father of ONE of her twins... Is that possible? I don’t think so....

When it came time for me to mix "Billie Jean", it was business as usual... When I am working with Michael, Quincy, Rod, Jennifer, Sergio and so on..... I am allowed total ceative freedom with the sonics of the music... In other words, I am always left to myself when it is time to mix. My mixes can take hours, days or even weeks.... I firmly believe that a mix is not finished, until it is on a Record for sale at Tower....

So I had been mixing "Billie Jean" for a day or two. I’d do a mix. ..... Say I was up to mix number 2.... (At that time I was mixing onto 1/2” analogue.) I thought it was killer!!!

I called MJ, Quincy and Rod into the control room and played mix 2 for them. They loved it!!! They were all dancing and carrying on like crazy!!! Smiles all around! Then Michael slipped out of the control room, turned around and motioned to me to follow him... Then he whispered to me, “Please Bruce, it’s perfect, but turn the Bass up just a tiny bit, and do one more mix, please....” I said to him...”OK Smelly, no problem”...

(When we were recording “Off The Wall”, Quincy gave Michael the nickname of “Smelly” because when Michael liked a groove, he’d call it “Smelly Jelly.” Also Michael doesn’t curse, and when MJ wants to say a bad word he’ll simply call it “Smelly”... The name has stuck...)

Then I went back into the control room to add Michael’s tiny bit of bass to my mix... Quincy pulled me over into the corner and said “Please Svensk... “(Svensk is Quincy’s nickname for me. It means “Swedish Man” in Swedish... When you have a genuine Quincy Jones nickname like ‘Svensk” - You are truly honored....) Q said to me.... “Add a little garlic salt to the snare and the kick. Just a squirt!!!”) so I went back into the control room and added a little garlic salt to the snare and the kick. Just a squirt!!! Now I was up to mix 20 on "Billie Jean".

Well, this went on for about a week. Soon I was up to mix 91!!! I had a stack of 1/2 inch tapes almost to the ceiling!!! I would do a few mixes, we’d listen... Then do a few more. We had it PERFECT!!! We thought we had a really ‘HOT’ mix on “Billie Jean”. I played Mix 91 for the boys... Everybody smiled... but Quincy had one of his funny looks on his face...

I thought.... Hmmmm.... Oh, Oh....

Quincy said “You know Svensk, just for the fun of it, can we listen to one of your earlier mixes???” My heart jumped because I knew that my earlier mixes were dynamite!!! Then Quincy said, “Let’s hear mix number 2!!!” Oh WOW!!!! Hallelujah!!! I love mix 2!!!!

We listened to mix 2... IT WAS SLAMMIN’!!! EVERYONE IN THE STUDIO WAS GROOVIN’ AND DANCIN’ and HAPPY, and actin’ IGNORANT!!!!

Well, here’s the deal. When “Thriller” was released to the Whole World by Epic Records, on Tuesday, November 30, 1982, it went to Tower Records with MIX 2 OF "Billie Jean" on it!!! AND, when the single of "Billie Jean" came out it was MIX 2!!!

"There were pieces of music that I think would have been wonderful."

Swedien, whose book In the Studio With Michael Jackson arrives July 27, describes one unreleased song, Don't Be Messin' Around, as "a medium-tempo piece, with Jackson playing piano. And he does it well."

ziuta123. Baaaaaardzo Ci dziękuję za te wspomnienia B. Swediena i te linki do Youtube. Znalazłam też inne filmiki, między innymi bardzo śmieszną anegdotę o psie Bruce'a w czasie nagrywania Thrillera, oraz wypowiedz już po śmierci MJ dla CNN o pracy nad piosenką Childhood. Zainteresowani znajdą je bez trudu. Wszystko co obejrzałam i przeczytałam jeszcze bardziej zachęciło mnie do zdobycia książki Swediena. Dzięki raz jeszcze.

Próbuję przebrnąć przez tę książkę, ale to trudne, ze względu na znudzenie tym, co w książce się pojawia. Bruce nie umie snuć opowieści i jest tego chyba świadomy, skoro co chwila pojawiają się zbędne detale toczka w toczkę z książeczek z płyt, kto na czym zagrał w danym utworze. Czysty wypełniacz, by książka nie miała zbyt skromnej objętości.
Poza tym sporo detali czysto technicznych w stylu- tu zastosowałem taki mikrofon, tu taki kabel. Jakby Michael był pretekstem do napisania książki dla branży. Nie ujmując Bruce'owi, bo nie mam wątpliwości co do czystości jego intencji. Szanował i miał serce dla Michaela- to widać. Bruce robi wrażenie miłego misia- takiego melancholika, który czasem potrafi szarżować. Z największym rozrzewnieniem wspomina okres pracy w zespole z Michaelem, Quincy'm i Rodem Tempertonem. To jest właśnie największa zaleta Thrillera i Off The Wall- praca zespołowa, w małym zgranym gronie.
Czasem pojawiają się anegdoty, ale zwykle są one dość znane i oszczędnie opisane. Często pojawiają się wylewne komplementy względem króla popu- takie w stylu wypowiedzi Q znanych nam choćby z bonusów na specjalnych edycjach z 2001 roku, ale... No dobrze. Michael wielkim artystą i człowiekiem jest. Miłe to, tylko przyjemności w czytaniu nie pomaga. Brakuje dłuższych historii, jak to było w studio z Michaelem, jak wyglądał proces twórczy i jak on się zmieniał w czasie. Brakuje zwyczajnych historii.
Co ciekawe, to już jego druga książka. Pierwsza miała tytuł Make Mine Music.

Niestety, jak na razie, książka rozczarowuje. I nie wiem, czy dobrnę do końca, bo będąc w przeszło 1/3 i przeglądając resztę widzę, że niewiele później się zmienia na lepsze. I do tego nierzadko pojawiają się błędy merytoryczne.
Mam świadomość, że popełniam błąd, wyciągając już wnioski, nie przeczytawszy reszty. Jak będzie inaczej, obiecuję, że wszystko odszczekam.
Chyba że ktoś już dobrnął do końca?

Kaem, ostudziłeś mój zapał do tej książki. Z materiałów, na youtube wywnioskowałam, że Bruce potrafi jednak jak to ująłeś snuć opowieść, do tego z dowcipem i fantazją. Ale język mówiony to nie to samo, co pisany, fakt. Mam nadzieję, że ostateczne wrażenia będą jednak pozytywne.

Od pewnego czasu odbywają się seminaria organizowane przez Brada Sundberga, wieloletniego pracownika, dźwiękowca,a prywatnie również przyjaciela Michaela Jacksona.

Dodatkowo opowiada o Capitan EO, Of The Wall i Thrillerze.
Jeden z uczestników wspomina:
Brad opowiadał wzruszające i zabawne historie od serca z jego wielu lat ścisłej współpracy z Michaelem. Jego szacunek dla niego było oczywisty przez cały czas.
Byłem naprawdę powalony niesamowitym wideo i nagraniami audio Michaela w pracy.
Jest to seminarium pierwszej klasy prowadzone przez faceta pierwszej klasy.
Żaden fan Michaela nie powinien tego przegapić.

Seminaria do tej pory miały miejsce jedynie w USA ale.....Brad zawitał do Europy!!

Jak się tylko da !to będę.

Nie lada gratką jest seminarium planowane w LA w legendarnym Westlake Studio.
Oprócz opowieści muzyki i filmów goście zostaną uraczeni ucztą ugotowaną prze Slum Dunk ten sam zespół dziewczyn, które gotowały dla zespołu Michaela w każdy piątek.Będzie można poczuć smak tamtych chwil.
Co za wspaniała celebracja wspólnej pracy cementowana wspólnymi obiadami.



Ja wciąż nie mogę uwierzyć...jeszcze tak niedawno przeżywałam, kiedy w czerwcu otwarto podwoje studia dla nielicznej grupy.Wydawało mi się to niedoścignionym marzeniem....a teraz mam bilet w ręku i realny termin.Mogę poznać Michaela tego nie z gazet, ale clou wszystkiego.
Takiego jakim był dla bliskich... bez show,błyszczących ubrań i wypomadowanych włosów.
Cytując z mojego ukochanego filmu B. Wildera Sabriny z A.Hepburn i Bogartem..."On nawet nie wie, że istnieje. Równie dobrze mogłabym sięgać po księżyc." ale kiedy widzę, jak jest w kraju tuż obok, jak wszystko jest na wyciągnięcie ręki takie normalne....to jakby księżyc chciał dosięgnąć mnie.

Ponieważ będę miała szczęście spotkać się z Brucem 1,5 godziny wcześniej przed właściwym seminarium, jako bonus jest możliwość zadawania pytań.
Oczywiście znając życie będę miała pustkę w głowie.
Jednakże jeśli ktoś chciałby się czegoś dowiedzieć, o coś spytać....piszcie tutaj, lub na moje pw.
Przetłumaczę pytania na angielski i zadam Bruce.

Czy powodem tego, że nie zorganizował takich spotkań w Polsce był brak zainteresowania ? Przy przy mojej znajomości języka angielskiego wiele bym nie zrozumiała ale chociaż muzyki Michaela bym posłuchała i magię poczuła
